❓Trading warrants over NIKKEI 225, NASDAQ-100 and S&P 500? Here's why futures matter

Investors trading structured warrants over the NIKKEI 225 (NIKKEI), NASDAQ-100® (NDX), and S&P 500® (SP500) may have noticed that these products continue to trade actively during Malaysian market hours, even when the underlying cash equity markets are closed.

The reason lies in the futures market. Futures linked to the NASDAQ-100 and S&P 500 trade for around 23 hours a day, while SGX Nikkei 225 futures are available for almost 22 hours daily.

Macquarie's structured warrants over these global indices track the relevant futures contracts rather than the spot index levels. Because market makers hedge using these futures contracts, bid and offer prices can continue to be quoted for much of the Bursa Malaysia trading session (refer to the market-making hours shown at the bottom of our Live Matrix tool).

For U.S. indices in particular, futures trading spans both the regular and overnight trading sessions, allowing global developments, economic releases and market-moving news to be reflected in prices as they occur rather than when the underlying cash market reopens.

📉‼AI fears and oil spike drag Wall Street lower

S&P 500: 7,659.44 (-1.1%)
Nasdaq-100: 29,187.55 (-2.5%)
DJIA: 52,002.41 (-0.3%)
Eurostoxx: 6,204.23(+0.6%)
U.S. crude futures: $99.02 (+1.1%)
Spot Gold (XAU/USD): $4,165.42 (-0.1%)

Wall Street fell sharply on Friday, with the Nasdaq down 2.15% and the S&P 500 off 1.10%, driven by renewed pressure on AI-related stocks like CoreWeave and Broadcom amid concerns that heavily indebted AI infrastructure companies may not generate profits in time to service their debt. A 3%-plus surge in oil prices added to investor caution, with high energy costs seen as a drag on equity valuations and a reason for traders to reduce risk heading into the weekend. Markets are also pricing in unchanged Fed rates this month, though Barclays now expects 25bp hikes in both December and January, as inflation data continues to run hotter than expected.

HSI slips 1.5%, Nikkei tumbles 5% as hot U.S. inflation data hits tech stocks

- The HSI fell 1.5% by midday as stronger-than-expected U.S. inflation data fuelled concerns of further Fed rate hikes, weighing on technology and AI-related stocks.

- On Bursa Malaysia, HSI-CWU2 was the most actively traded HSI call warrant at the lunch break, with 65.7 million units changing hands.

- Japanese equities were hit harder, with the Nikkei 225 plunging 5.1% to 64,285.17 and Nikkei futures down 5.7%, pressured by a broad sell-off in technology shares.

- The move followed a sharp decline in the Nasdaq overnight after U.S. September CPI came in above expectations, reigniting concerns that interest rates may stay higher for longer.

- Major tech-related names led the losses, with Kioxia Holdings (-11.2%), Advantest (-9.3%), SoftBank Group (-9.3%) and Tokyo Electron (-6.6%) among the biggest decliners.

- Macquarie's Nikkei put warrants dominated the top gainers list, with NIKKEI-H11 bid price rising 85.7%.

- Bargain hunting emerged in call warrants, with NIKKEI-C18 and NIKKEI-C16 recording 3.0 million and 1.3 million units traded respectively, despite bid prices falling 48.5% and 42.7%.

🏛️ Malaysia Strategy – Budget 2027: The populist policy pivot

Macquarie Equities Research (MQ Research) issued a report on 12th October providing insights on the latest Budget 2027 policy. MQ Research highlights that it was a restrained election budget, with policy shifting towards M40/Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with lower taxes/tax relief taking centre stage against modest growth in cash handouts. Additionally, MQ Research states that higher minimum wages are a negative, representing potentially higher headwinds to Consumers, Planters, Constructors and Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) (Technology (Tech)) players.

💻📉 Inflation surprise hits U.S. equities and rate-sensitive tech stocks

S&P 500: 7,718.94 (-1.1%)
Nasdaq-100: 29,950.82 (-2.0%)
DJIA: 51,621.48 (-0.1%)
Eurostoxx: 6,190.37 (+0.4%)
U.S. crude futures: $95.09 (+1.0%)
Spot Gold (XAU/USD): $4,104.80 (-1.4%)

U.S. equities retreated on Wednesday after hotter-than-expected inflation revived concerns that the Federal Reserve may need to tighten monetary policy further. September headline inflation accelerated to 3.7% year-on-year, above the 3.6% consensus and August’s 3.4%, as gasoline costs climbed. Core inflation also exceeded expectations, rising 0.3% month-on-month and 2.6% annually. The report prompted traders to raise the probability of an October rate increase to 37% from 22% previously, intensifying pressure on rate-sensitive growth stocks. Technology declined 2.6%, led by pronounced weakness across AI infrastructure and semiconductors (Reuters, 15 October).

📈 HSTECH rebounds as Alibaba, Meituan and Xiaomi lead tech rally

- The Hang Seng TECH Index (HSTECH) rebounded 1.3%, after rising as much as 2.6% to an intraday high of 4,243.65. Technology heavyweights Alibaba Group Holding (ALIBABA), Meituan and Xiaomi Corporation (XIAOMI) were among the principal gainers.

- Alibaba shares climbed 3.6% to HKD111.10 as at time of writing, after touching HKD113.20 earlier in the session. Trading activity also picked up, with 65.2 million shares changing hands, already 32% above Tuesday’s full-day volume of 49.3 million shares (Yahoo Finance, 14 October).

- The rise followed Alibaba’s unveiling of its next-generation Qwen Glasses N1, which start from RMB2,999 and integrate the company’s Qwen AI assistant with shopping, payment and health-tracking functions. A Pro edition priced at RMB3,499 also offers eye-tracking capabilities (The Star, 14 October).

- The launch broadens Alibaba’s AI strategy beyond cloud infrastructure and large-language models into consumer hardware, potentially creating another entry point into its wider Qwen, Taobao and Alipay ecosystem (The Star, 14 October).

- Meanwhile, Meituan shares surged 6.1% to HKD76.70, having traded as high as HKD77.35. Trading volume was triple the 20-day average (Bloomberg, 14 October).
- The move appeared to form part of a wider rebound among previously beaten-down Chinese internet stocks as investors rotated towards lower-valued technology names ahead of the upcoming earnings season (itiger, 14 October).

- Xiaomi shares advanced 5.8% to HKD26.50. Xiaomi’s rebound came despite IDC reporting that its China smartphone shipments fell 20.4% year-on-year during the third quarter, amid weaker consumer spending and higher memory-component costs. Supporting sentiment instead was continued momentum in its electric-vehicle business, where the new Sky Nomad range secured more than 70,000 locked-in orders during its first month and helped Xiaomi’s September vehicle deliveries exceed 40,000 units (Reuters, 13 October).

- With all three stocks recording strong gains alongside higher trading activity, investors expecting further upside may consider gaining leveraged exposure through the relevant Alibaba, Meituan and Xiaomi call warrants.

- ALIBABA-C57, MEITUAN-C43 and XIAOMI-C46 feature effective gearing levels of 5-6x, meaning the warrants tend to move 5-6% for every 1% move in their respective underlying shares. All three warrants are up in bid price by 33%-50%.

- Additionally, these warrants only expire in February and March 2027, providing investors with an avenue to trade the medium-term moves of ALIBABA, MEITUAN and XIAOMI without experiencing meaningful time decay.

⏳ Markets search for direction as earnings season begins

S&P 500: 7,805.45 (0.0%)
Nasdaq-100: 30,569.48 (-0.3%)
DJIA: 51,670.10 (-0.4%)
Eurostoxx: 6,167.01 (-0.6%)
U.S. crude futures: $94.14 (+0.4%)
Spot Gold (XAU/USD): $4,160.79 (-0.3%)

U.S. equities ended marginally lower as investors weighed the start of third-quarter earnings season against concerns over artificial intelligence (AI) valuations and persistent inflation risks. The dollar weakened as investors reassessed rate expectations ahead of September’s U.S. inflation data. Markets increasingly favoured the Fed holding rates steady at its October meeting (Investing.com, 13 October). Corporate results provided little fresh impetus. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup reported better-than-expected results in key areas, but reactions were mixed as investors scrutinised earnings quality and forward guidance (Investing.com, 13 October). Semiconductor stocks remained under pressure amid intensifying Chinese competition and doubts over the sustainability of AI investment, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index extending its decline for a fifth consecutive session. Attention now turns to September CPI, due Wednesday, alongside further bank earnings. With equities near record highs and energy-driven inflation still a concern, the data could prove pivotal in determining whether markets can sustain their rally without renewed pressure from bond yields (Reuters, 13 October).

📉 HSI reverses after 0.6% climb as Fed concerns outweigh China optimism

– The Hang Seng Index (HSI) reversed into losses on Thursday after rising as much as 0.6% in the morning session, with early optimism giving way to caution as investors remained wary of the global interest rate outlook and broader risk sentiment (Trading Economics, 3 September).

– Initial support came from signs of improving economic momentum in China, after the latest August Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data showed stronger activity across both the manufacturing and services sectors, helping mainland equities extend gains and lifting Hong Kong shares at the open (Trading Economics, 3 September).

– However, buying interest faded heading into the afternoon session as investors continued to weigh the prospect of higher-for-longer U.S. interest rates following recent hawkish signals from Federal Reserve officials, which have pressured valuations of technology and growth stocks across the region.

– HSI warrants remained actively traded on Bursa Malaysia as traders looked to capitalise on the index's intraday volatility, with both bullish and bearish positioning emerging following the sharp reversal from the morning high.

– Investors actively traded HSI put warrants, with HSI-PWTN emerging as the most traded warrant on Bursa Malaysia, recording 45.3M units traded. Close behind was HSI-PWVE, with 42.6M units changing hands.

– Despite the heavier trading activity in put warrants, net positioning remained skewed towards call warrants. As at the lunch break, investors were net buyers of 10.0M units of HSI-CWS2 and 5.6M units of HSI-CWSO. Both warrants expire on 29 September 2026.

– These warrants offer effective gearing of approximately 12x to 26x, implying the warrants could move by 12% to 26% for every 1% move in HSI futures. Investors should note that put warrants move inversely to the performance of the underlying asset they track.
