🔹 Sensitivity: Probability that a test is positive among individuals who truly have the disease.

Sensitivity = TP / (TP + FN) × 100

🔹 Specificity: Probability that a test is negative among individuals who truly do not have the disease.

Specificity = TN / (TN + FP) × 100

🔹 Positive Predictive Value (PPV): Probability that a person with a positive result truly has the disease.

PPV = TP / (TP + FP) × 100

🔹 Negative Predictive Value (NPV): Probability that a person with a negative result truly does not have the disease.

NPV = TN / (TN + FN) × 100

Where TP = true positive, TN = true negative, FP = false positive and FN = false negative.

⚠️ EXAM TRAP: Sensitivity and specificity are generally treated as test characteristics in a defined population, whereas predictive values change with disease prevalence.

👶 POWER NURSING NOTES: APGAR SCORING

The APGAR score assesses a newborn's condition at 1 and 5 minutes after birth. If the 5-minute score is below 7, assessment is generally repeated every 5 minutes up to 20 minutes according to neonatal resuscitation guidance.

Each of five components receives 0, 1 or 2 points:

🔹 A — Appearance: Colour
🔹 P — Pulse: Heart rate
🔹 G — Grimace: Reflex irritability
🔹 A — Activity: Muscle tone
🔹 R — Respiration: Respiratory effort

📌 Scoring: Each component contributes a maximum of 2 points, giving a total of 0–10.

A score of 7–10 is generally reassuring; lower scores indicate varying degrees of difficulty adapting to extrauterine life and require clinical interpretation.

⚠️ EXAM TRAP: APGAR scoring must not delay neonatal resuscitation. Positive-pressure ventilation should be initiated promptly when indicated by the newborn's breathing and heart rate.
